With the NFL Preseason kicking off this week, the real position battles begin and training camp ends. Now is the time for some players to show that they belong. Multiple teams have an interesting situation at the Quarterback spot, arguably the most important position in all of sports. Who wins the starting gig?
Pittsburgh Steelers - Russell Wilson vs. Justin Fields
QB Russell Wilson seemed to be the obvious choice as starting QB of the Steelers. Injury struck, leading to Fields taking the majority of snaps with the first team, now it becomes interesting. Calf injuries can be tricky, Pittsburgh is clearly being cautious with Wilson. Fields reportedly had a great week of practice last week, the team's first first full week with pads. The Steelers' preseason games may be the most intriguing of the NFL Preseason, stay tuned.
Projected Starter: Justin Fields.
New England Patriots - Jacoby Brissett vs. Drake Maye
As a Patriots fan myself, as much as I want to see Drake Maye play, it may be best not to rush him. I can see Jerod Mayo taking the safe approach by starting the season with Jacoby Brissett as the starting QB. The reports coming out of camp are about 50/50 on Drake Maye. Some good days, some bad days, perfectly normal for a rookie QB. Maye's upside may prove to be too much to bench, it could go either way.
Projected Starter: Jacoby Brissett
Denver Broncos - Bo Nix vs. Jarrett Stidham vs. Zach Wilson
For the Broncos sake, they should probably start Bo Nix. This could get ugly, fast, regardless of who starts. I am having a hard time seeing Nix not start the season unless he has a bad camp and Stidham or Wilson have a spectacular camp/preseason.
Projected Starter: Bo Nix
Las Vegas Raiders - Aidan O'Connell vs. Gardner Minshew
The Raiders need to win now, especially with the roster they have. Neither of these QB's raise anyone's eyebrows but Minshew does have a good track record. He has always kept his team in it and fighting for the playoffs. O'Connell had his moments last season, trusting him to start 16 games and make the playoffs? That is pretty hard to imagine.
Projected Starter: Gardner Minshew
Minnesota Vikings - J.J. McCarthy vs. Sam Darnold
After Kirk Cousins left in free agency, the Vikings turned to the NFL Draft to find their future signal caller. They went with J.J. McCarthy out of Michigan with pick number 9, is he NFL ready right now though? NFL scouts seemed a little too high on McCarthy for my liking, Michigan was a run heavy offense. At least the Vikings have Justin Jefferson, the best WR in football. Starting McCarthy right off thr bat in Week 1 seems like a big risk to me, they will probably lean toward experience and start Darnold, similar to the Patriots situaiton.
Projected Starter: Sam Darnold
