As the 2023 NHL season gets underway, hockey fans are eagerly anticipating the thrilling action that lies ahead. Will the Vegas Golden Knights repeat as champs or will another franchise lift Lord Stanley for the first time? With a full 82-game schedule ahead of us, there's no shortage of excitement, drama, and nail-biting moments in store. While predicting the future in sports is always a challenge, we're here to offer some educated NHL predictions on who might emerge as the Stanley Cup Champion, MVP, and other notable awards.
Stanley Cup Champion:
Carolina Hurricanes (+900) def. Edmonton Oilers in 6 games.
The Carolina Hurricanes have been building a formidable team over the past few years, and I believe this is the year they break through to win the Cup. The Hurricanes are one of the most exciting and balanced offensive teams in the NHL. Led by center Sebastian Aho, who consistently ranks among the league's top scorers, the team doesn't struggle finding the back of the net. Wingers like Andrei Svechnikov and Jaccob Slavin provide additional scoring punch, making it tough for opposing teams. Not to mention defensemen Brent Burns and Dougie Hamilton. Goaltending is often the backbone of a championship-winning team, and the Hurricanes have a solid goalie in Frederik Andersen. Andersen's respectable track record, including numerous playoff appearances, gives Carolina a reliable presence between the pipes. If he can maintain his strong regular-season form into the playoffs, the Hurricanes will be a tough team to beat. Another Eastern Conference Final appearance is not enough for the Canes. Former player and head coach Rod Brind'Amour has helped the Hurricanes create a culture of hard work, accountability, and team-first mentality. Brind'Amour's leadership has clearly resonated with the players, developing a winning atmosphere that's essential for playoff success.
Hart Memorial Trophy (MVP):
Connor McDavid - Edmonton Oilers (+100)
It's hard to bet against Connor McDavid when it comes to the Hart Trophy. He's been the most dominant player in the league for several seasons now and shows no signs of slowing down. McDavid does not only lead in scoring but also elevates the play of his teammates, making those around him better. If McDavid can stay healthy, continue his incredible point-per-game pace and lead the Oilers to a successful season, I don't see how he doesn't win MVP again. When it's all said and done, McDavid could finish his career with the most MVP awards in NHL history.
Calder Trophy (Rookie of the Year):
Connor Bedard - Chicago Blackhawks (-125)
Keep an eye on players like Devon Levi (Buffalo Sabres), Adam Fantilli (Columbus Blue Jackets), and Logan Cooley (Arizona Coyotes) to make a big impact in their debut seasons, but it is hard not to choose Connor Bedard (Chicago Blackhawks). Bedard is a (-125) favorite to win the award. He is by far the most hyped up rookie since Connor McDavid to enter the NHL. Pressure is on for Bedard to turn around the once-dominant Blackhawks franchise.
Vezina Trophy (Best Goaltender):
Connor Hellebuyck - Winnipeg Jets (+500)
Hellebuyck can single-handedly steal games, make the Jets a top-5 team in the West, and maintain a remarkable save percentage even in high-pressure situations. With a solid defensive core in front of him and an ability to make the most challenging saves look routine, Hellebuyck has the potential to lead the league in goaltending statistics and secure the Vezina Trophy. If he continues to carry the Jets and keeps Winnipeg in playoff contention throughout the season, the (+500) odds will look better each day.
